Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean with a population of 700,000.
Being at the crossroads of some of the greatest civilizations in the ancient world, the archaeological riches across the island are a legacy to a fascinating history.
Dating back 9000 years, the Ancient Greeks, Persians and Romans are just some of the civilizations which left their mark on Cyprus. The island’s music, cuisine, art and architecture all reflect a mix of cultures and influences which the island has hosted over the course of its history giving it the unique character it has today.
There are many secluded beaches as well as picturesque Cypriot villages, famous for their silver-ware and lace making, waiting to be explored. There are breathtaking views to be found in the pine forests of the Troodos Mountains home to Mount Olympus and in winter, you can even take advantage of a popular ski resort. Of course, a trip to the Troodos wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the impressive Kykkos, the largest Orthodox monastery in Cyprus. It is in the Troodos that visitors will also find the tomb of the much revered first president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios.
Throughout its long history, the seat of Cyprus government has been in several different locations. Today, the old Venetian city of Nicosia is the capital of the island.
High street names, at home in any European capital, can be found in its shopping centre and the atmospheric old town is the perfect spot for a refreshing Cyprus coffee or fresh juice.
It is worth noting that, sadly, owing to the political situation in Cyprus, the capital is divided by the ‘Green Line’, as is the entire island. It is possible for people of all nationalities with a valid passport to travel to the northern part of the island, which has been occupied by the Turkish army since 1974. Across the ‘Green Line’ there are even more historical and cultural riches, such as Bellapaix, where Lawrence Durrell wrote his famous book ‘Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’.
Cyprus is also fast becoming a centre for European culture with several major dance, music and drama festivals taking place each year.
Whether you want to enjoy outdoor activities, history, art, wine, crafts or cuisine, Cyprus has such a lot to offer. There is so much to explore that you will simply have to come back time and time again.
